I know a post like this is probably long overdue.
… Okay, way overdue; I haven’t done one of these for a while. I went to Kenya a couple of years ago which is why this stood out to me so much – a long crack has appeared in its surface!
It’s no secret that East Africa is breaking apart (hence the name the East African Rift Valley, with rift meaning to break or move apart), so the news of this large surface crack appearing is news to be shared!
The area is still being heavily studied, but it is believed that in 50 million years or so that part of Africa could become its own little island between mainland Africa and Madagascar; none of us will be around to see that should it happen, but it just goes to show that geological processes are always happening, whether we see them or not!
